Botox injections have become the most popular non-surgical procedure in North America. It has been used for over 20 years to safely treat non-cosmetic conditions in the areas of ophthalmology and neurology. It is now used cosmetically to smooth out frown lines caused by repeated muscular contractions (such as in frowning or squinting) which create a dynamic wrinkle. Tiny amounts of Botox are injected into the muscle, blocking the nerve impulse from reaching that muscle and as a result, the muscle relaxes. As the muscle relaxes the dynamic wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed away.
Are there any other uses for Botox?
In addition to smoothing the frown lines between the eyebrows, around the eyes and on the forehead, Botox can be used to treat excessive sweating also known as Hyperhydrosis. This socially embarrassing and sometimes debilitating condition can affect the hands, feet, groin, face and underarms.
How long does a Botox treatment last?
The effects of Botox usually last 3 to 4 months. After several treatments, the effects may begin to last longer.
Are Botox injections painful?
Because the needle is so fine and the amount of product used is small, most patients experience minimal pain—many compare the sensation to a bug bite. No sedation or local anesthetic is required and most patients can resume normal activities immediately.
Are there any side effects to Botox injections?
The most common side effect is bruising in the area of the injection. This can usually be covered by make-up and is normally short lasting.
What are Restylane and Perlane?
Restylane and Perlane are types of injectable or “filler” substances made with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance already present in your body that attracts and binds water. The hyaluronic acid used in Restylane and Perlane is a stable, bio-degradable, non-animal substance produced under carefully controlled conditions. This crystal clear gel is injected into the skin where it binds water, creating fullness and resilience.
How is the procedure performed?
This procedure often takes less than 20 minutes depending on the area being treated. A topical anesthetic cream such as Betacaine or EMLA is often applied prior to the procedure. Dr. Sloan will then inject the area being treated with Restylane or Perlane. The amount of filler used will depend on the area being treated and the level of correction desired by the patient. Results are often seen immediately. After the treatment, some common injection-related reactions may occur, such as swelling, redness or tenderness at the site. These symptoms are normally treated with ice packs and usually resolve quickly.
